Mobile detailing vs a shop: what you actually give up

For washing, interiors, decontamination and most coating work, a properly equipped mobile setup does the same job as a shop; the real differences are weather, power and heavy multi-stage correction.

For washing, interiors, decontamination and most coating work, a properly equipped mobile setup does the same job as a shop; the real differences are weather, power and heavy multi-stage correction. That is the honest version, and it cuts both ways.

What “mobile” has to mean to be equivalent

A mobile detailer has to bring the utilities with them, or they are just borrowing yours. That means an onboard water tank and onboard power.

If a mobile service needs your outside tap and your garage socket, you are supplying half the job. In a Colorado January the tap is frozen anyway.

We arrive with our own water and our own power, which is why an office car park works as well as a driveway.

What mobile is genuinely better at

Three things, and they are not small:

  • You do not lose the day. The car is detailed where it already is, while you work. No drop off, no lift home, no arranging a second car.
  • Office car parks work. A lot of coating and correction happens while the owner is at their desk.
  • You see the work. The car does not disappear behind a roller door.

You do not need to be home. Most customers are not. Leave the car unlocked or hand over a key, and it is finished when you get back.

Where a shop genuinely wins

Two situations, and it is worth being straight about them.

Multi-stage correction on badly damaged paint

Heavy correction wants controlled lighting and unlimited time, and a two or three stage job on ruined paint is a shop job. A single-stage correction is not, and single-stage correction at $399 is what the large majority of cars actually need.

Weather that will not cooperate

Coatings need to cure and paint needs to be dry. Colorado weather gets a vote. If rain, snow or high wind makes the work impossible or pointless, we reschedule to the next open slot at no cost.

A covered garage or carport usually means the job goes ahead regardless, which covers most of it.

What does not change either way

The work itself. A foam bath, a two bucket contact wash, clay decontamination, a machine polish and a hand applied coating are the same processes wherever they happen. The equipment fits in a van.

What changes the result is time and standards, not postcode.

How to tell the difference between mobile services

Four questions:

  1. Do you bring your own water and power?
  2. What happens if the weather turns on the day?
  3. Where does the water go, and is there runoff into the street?
  4. Do I need to be here?

The runoff one matters more than people expect for apartment and HOA parking. A self-contained process that leaves nothing on the concrete but clean water is what most HOA rules are actually concerned with.

The short version

For a full detail at $249, an interior at $169, a decontamination wash or a ceramic coating at $299, mobile gives up nothing that matters. For multi-stage correction on paint that has been neglected for a decade, a shop has the edge.
